Joanna’s passion for tech goes hand-in-hand with her advocacy for diversity. Drawing inspiration from her friends, family and colleagues who work across various fields like engineering, health and education has inspired her to seek out all the unique and non-linear career progressions possible. Her go-to piece of career advice though? Investing in two monitors! We couldn't agree more.
You can learn more about this inspiring woman in tech here:
I started in accounting but always enjoyed being involved in analytical projects working to solve problems and provide reporting solutions. I made the move into Business Intelligence quite early on mostly because I enjoy the interactive nature of providing data solutions. I find the balance of spending half my time concentrating on writing code/reports and the other half interacting and working with the business to be a great mix.
I have found there to be lots of opportunities for specialisation. I have previously held BI Lead and Insights Management roles which I found to be very rewarding as I enjoy mentoring and developing others. That said, this data space is really big and at the moment I am liking working as a Power BI Developer. I like that progression in this field isn't super linear and you can grow and develop in many different ways.
I don't know that I have a specific role model in the technology field. I have always drawn inspiration from family and friends working in other fields eg. engineering, health, education and social services. I think by learning from others in a diverse range of professions we can appreciate the positives in our own roles and gain valuable perspective from those around us.
I think diversity is important everywhere. A diverse environment allows for a wealth of experience and perspective which is particularly important when trying to solve problems and provide solutions.

What is your dream or goal for the future of tech?
I like to keep a really open mind, this space is moving so fast it is hard to predict the future. I prefer to just go with the flow.
